Red Lowline Genetics at Wanamara Farm

Picture
We have a visitor to Wanamara farm - a lovely young red Lowline bull from Queensland - McIntosh Creek Monsoon Red.

Monsoon Red will be joining some of our black Lowline cows to produce progeny who will be Red gene carriers.

With very few red Lowline animals in Victoria, these calves will have the ability to produce more red Lowlines. The quality of Wanamara cattle will ensure the progeny is special.

In 2018 fertilised embryos from elite Wanamara Lowline cows were collected & sold in Great Britain. It is so pleasing to see the resulting embryo calves doing so well for their owners, John & Lucie Walsh, BOIHEAMACH stud in County Kerry Ireland & Owen & Sophie Tunney SUNSHINE stud in Cuddington, Buckinghamshire, England.
Further embryos were sent in 2020 & 2021 to Europe where Australian Lowline calves from Wanamara genetics are being born now.

2019 Royal Melbourne Show                               September 2019

Another successful Melbourne Show & another broad ribbon for our wonderful cattle. Consistency is our motto & the proof is in the continued success of our bloodlines in the show ring.

Due to the prolonged drought & the lack of feed, we only entered 2 young heifers in this years show. Both heifers won their classes & the baby, Wanamara Jelly Baby was presented with the Reserve Junior Champion ribbon.

Class 9 - 12 months - 1st place Wanamara Jelly Baby & Reserve Junior Champion Heifer (daughter of Wanamara Licorice Allsorts & Wanamara Consentino)

Class 16 - 18 months - 1st place Wanamara Dirty Dancing (daughter of Wanamara Strictly Ballroom)

We had 2 Senior entries in the 2019 Sydney Show - 3 year old, Wanamara Licorice Allsorts & her first calf, Wanamara Jelly Baby, & our young bull, Wanamara Dynamite, 22 months old, who just was the youngest of all the senior bulls exhibited.

Wanamara Licorice Allsorts was placed 3rd in a very strong senior cow class & showed what a fantastic young cow she is.

Wanamara Dynamite was presented with the Reserve Senior Bull ribbon - a fantastic result for our young sire.

A very exciting 2018 Royal Sydney Show -
Wanamara Tilly Devine with her calf Wanamara Mary Poppins won Reserve Senior Champion Cow against a very smart line-up of Lowline cows. This is Tilly's third Sydney Show in her 6 years and she has won a broad ribbon each time.
The big surprise of the day was first timer, Wanamara Consentino winning the Reserve Senior Champion Bull at his first show.
Congratulations to Matt Cooney, who bred the Grand Champion Female, Cann Vally Lunar Eclipse and also the Senior Champion Bull, Cann Valley Momentous, both the progeny of Matt's cow, Wanamara Royal Opal.
Very pleasing to see our genetics doing so well in the show ring at Sydney.
A big Thank You to Steve Bevan for leading my cows to victory.

Another very successful Adelaide Show for Wanamara Farm with 27 month old Wanamara Cavalier winning Senior Champion & Grand Champion Bull followed by the Supreme Lowline Exhibit.

This was a back-to-back win from the year before when Cavalier won, Junior Champion & Grand Champion Bull as well as the Supreme Exhibit award.

Our young bull, Wanamara Talisman came 2nd in the 10 - 16 month Class & will be a much better bull for the experience.

Both bulls are now entered for Melbourne Show at the end of September........ so watch this space......

Wanamara Jack Daniel - 7 years on...               August 2017

Picture
In 2010, Wanamara Jack Daniel won Reserve Junior Champion Bull at the Royal Melbourne Show (his first show). Shortly after, he was sold to a lovely retired couple, Judy & Jim Taylor from Goomalibee as a sire for their commercial Lowlines.

Due to ill health, Judy & Jim had to leave the farm to live in Benalla so Jack was sold to friend nearby.

Recently I was sent a lovely photo of Jack with some of his girls. Still a gentleman and a magnificent Lowline bull, Jack is now over 8 years old and is following in the longevity footsteps of his father, Wanamara Guinness who is now 11 years old and still working.

It is so satisfying to see the animals you have bred with good, sensible owners, doing what they were bred to do.

Photo Right:  Latest update - Evonne has presented us with us beautiful heifer calf in August. We will look forward to seeing the new genetics in our Wanamara herd

We have welcomed two new Lowline ladies to our farm - Blue Jem Cecillia & Blue Jem Evonne - who have travelled from Inverell, NSW to join our herd.

These exceptional girls were bred by Emma & Jason Germany, Blue Jem Lowlines, & we are looking forward to them producing calves with our Wanamara bulls.

The genetics of these cows originate from the Allambie herd bred by the late Tammy Breuer, a much loved member of the Australian Lowline family. And we are very proud to carry on Tammy's legacy.

2017 Royal Sydney Show                               April 2017

Another Royal Sydney Show over. Wonderful to have success with my own cattle but all the more special to see progeny of my cows out in the ring doing well - Congratulations to Matt Cooney, Cann Valley Lowlines & O'Hara Lowlines for their success.
It was great to spend time with the other Lowline breeders - thanks for everything.

Wanamara Licorice Allsorts
Heifer Class 9 - 12 mths - 1st Place  & Junior Champion Heifer

Wanamara Cavalier
Senior Bull Class 20 - 24 mths - 2nd Place

Wanamara Farm has produced 4 Junior Champion Heifers at the Royal Sydney Show in the past 7 years, with two of these being Grand Champion Females. Our bulls have won 3 Junior Champions (2 being Grand Champion Bulls) over the years with other bulls & heifers picking up Reserve broad ribbons.
Our motto is 'Consistantly Breeding Quality' & this show is proof, as little Wanamara Licorice Allsorts wasn't bred from any of my show cattle, she was just one straight from the paddock.

Seymour Expo is over for another year. Thank you all who stopped for a chat. We caught up with old neighbors from Taradale where we used to live and other Lowline breeders.

Our 22 month old bull, Wanamara Cavalier was on his best behaviour. We also had Wanamara Ruby Sunset out of retirement for the weekend with her 7 month old calf, Wanamara Consentino, who enjoyed being the centre of attention with the public.

It was the 20th Anniversary of Australian Lowlines being shown at Melbourne Show this year - Wanamara Lowlines being there for every year!

Wanamara genetics excelled again by winning Junior Champion Bull with young 16 month old Wanamara Cavalier, backing up his win at the recent Royal Adelaide Show.

Our beautiful young cow Wanamara Ruby Sunset followed her wins last year as Junior Champion Heifer at the Sydney & Melbourne Shows by winning Reserve Senior Champion Cow, with her first calf, Wanamara Consentino, at her side. Ruby will be retired from showing now so she can be a mum & produce some more show winners for us.
Watch out for Consentino in the show ring next year!

After both winning their Australian Lowline classes, & then winning Grand Champions in their own divisions, they went on to compete against each other for Supreme Lowline Exhibit. Wanamara Cavalier came our on top & was sashed Supreme Lowline Exhibit.

PictureWanamara Ruby Sunset with her first calf - a great little bull by Wanamara Merlin

The best time to be in the paddock is at sunset when the calves race around together.

Sires for these calves are Serena Downs Googolplex, Wanamara Whos My Daddy,
Wanamara Merlin, & Wanamara Black Douglas.

Our first calves from our new Lowline sire Google (Serena Downs Googolplex) have hit the ground running - beautiful calves so we will have quite a a few to choose from for next year's show team.

We also have Lowline cross  & Speckle Park calves so an exciting time at Wanamara Farm!

SRPG On Farm Challenge                                            June 2016

On the long weekend, 11 - 13th June, the Southern Region Promotion Group held an On Farm Challenge around Victoria. This involved judge. Larry Cutler, being taken to 15 Lowline studs & judging 75 animals entered for the Challenge. No preparation of cattle is allowed so the judge sees the animals in paddock condition.
In the Female 12 - 18 mths Class, we entered Wanamara Whos My Honey & Wanamara Firestorm. In the Female 18 - 24mths Class was Wanamara Ruby Sunset, Female Over 24 mths & under 5 yrs Class were Wanamara Black Caviar & Wanamara Opal Nera, & in the Over 5 yrs Class was our matron Wanamara Leticia. We also had a Sires Progeny Group for Wanamara Guinness - Black Caviar, Opal Nera & Tequila Sunrise.

We were judged at sunrise on Sunday 12th June so it was a very early & chilly start to the day but we are thrilled with the results.
Results - Class 12-18 mths - Wanamara Firestorm    2nd place
Class 18-24mths - Wanamara Ruby Sunset    3rd place

2016 Royal Sydney Show                                             March 2016

Show time again and I took three Lowlines to Sydney again. Baby heifer, Wanamara Fire Opal, Wanamara Ruby Sunset, at 20 months old who is now classified as a senior heifer & showing against older cows with calves at foot, and young bull, Wanamara Tom Collins, who has grown quite a bit since Melbourne Show.
All three did us proud by winning their classes & Wanamara Tom Collins proceeded to be sashed Reserve Junior Champion Bull.
He is the son of Guinness & Princess Fiona. All his brothers, Jack Daniel, Legend & Whos My Daddy are also broad ribbon winners a Royal Shows, making it a family tradition!
A big 'Thank You' to Harry Turnham for helping me on show day.

2016 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo          February 2016

Wanamara Farm took Lowlines & Speckle Park cattle for display to the Seymour Expo. We had many interested visitors to our site & were constantly answering questions about both breeds. Our well behaved Ruby & Pink had many children & adults keen to give them pats & take photos.

Chef, Adrian Hensley demonstrated different recipes & ways to use beef. The public were given taste tests with the cooked beef & other meats during the weekend.

The Country Kitchen was a very popular attraction.

The focus of Seymour Expo this year was Produce from Paddock to Plate. We supplied a side of Lowline beef, grassfed, with no preparation & straight from the paddock at Major Plains.
Butcher, Bob Dewar, said " This steer has the rich red color which is appealing to the eye & makes you want to eat it, a sign of good beef with intense flavor. It has good marbling & intramuscular fat, with the perfect finish"

Wanamara Bulls go to Glen Innes            November 2015

Picture
Five of our bulls have been selected to join a large Angus enterprise at Furracabad Station at Glen Innes NSW.

These bulls will be used to join Angus heifers with the end result being earlier maturing steers for the 'Grass Fed' market. The smaller frame size of the Lowlines & early maturing traits will be perfect to produce steers that suit this market, something that the Angus of today are failing to do.

Daddy, Dougie, Phantom, Palladium & young Sergeant travelled 1100km to their new home. They will be missed here but are doing what they have been bred to do.

Exciting New Sire at Wanamara Farm        September 2015

Picture
We welcome our new herd sire, Serena Downs Googolplex, to Wanamara Farm - Grand Champion Bull & Supreme Exhibit at the 2015 Royal Canberra & 2015 Royal Adelaide Shows.
Thank you to Chris & Michael Noel of Serena Downs Stud  for allowing me to purchase him.

A powerful bull with great structure but wonderful temperament, Google will add plenty of muscle to our steers for our Lowline Beef production. Weighing 730 kg, he stands 126cm tall at the hip & has an eye muscle area of 100cm sq, he has a with great presence.

Our Wanamara girls can't wait to meet him & we look forward to his first calves on the ground next year.

Wanamara Genetics on the Isle of Man        September 2014

After many months of waiting the first Lowline calves have been born on the Isle of Man, Great Britain.

In 2013 quality genetics of four Victorian studs, Wanamara Farm, Whitby Farm, Barregowa & Elandra Park, were selected to provide embryos for this epic venture which was also the largest & the first ‘sexed’ (male & female) shipment to leave Australia.

These diverse genetics will provide a wide genetic pool as a foundation for the new herds of Lowline cattle in the Isle of Man & the UK.

The first ‘sexed’ Lowline heifers were born in September 2014 while the next group of recipient cows are due in January 2015, with more later in the year. Some embryos were sold directly to the UK so Lowline heifers have been born there from this shipment also. The calves are said to be ‘really great & just bounding on’.

Wanamara cattle were very successful at this year's Royal Melbourne Show. These were three young animals, at their first shows, and all were exceptional. Judge, Peter Falls, Shorthorn breeder from Finley NSW, admired the Wanamara cattle for their good structure, length of body & balance. The Wanamara 'Group of Three' came second in this Breeders Class to older animals so it proved that our breeding program is going well.

Picture
Matt Cooney with Wanamara Strictly Ballroom
Wanamara Farm had the pleasure of having two Lowline Youth members stay on-farm for a few days before heading to the 2014 Stud Beef Victoria Handlers Camp held at the Showgrounds in Melbourne.

Katherine Moore travelled from Taranaki on New Zealand's North Island & Victorian, Matt Cooney came from Cann River in East Gippsland.

They were two of three Youth members selected by ALCA to receive sponsorship for attending the Camp this year. They had the chance to experience life on Wanamara Farm, the animals & facilities, & spent time practising with three Wanamara heifers that were going to the camp, two of these were to be handled by Katherine & Matt, & the other was for another participant, Indi Skehan.

Major prizes at the camp were Lowline heifers donated by Wanamara & Ardrossan Studs for a male & female participant, selected from interviews & their performance shown throughout the camp.

The worthy winner of the Wanamara heifer was Lucas Kallady from Bayles, Victoria. We wish Lucas every success with his new Lowline stud & his show career with his Wanamara heifer.

Wanamara has welcomed a lovely bull calf sired by top American Lowline Bull, MCR Standing Bear. This bull calf, yet unnamed, is the first calf born in Australia by artificial insemination from semen imported from the USA. MCR Standing Bear is a top American sire bred by Muddy Creek Ranch in Montana.
His unique out-cross genetics will be used in the Wanamara herd & we are hoping to have great success with his progeny.

Twins at Wanamara Farm        August 2012

It is calving time again & Wanamara Farm has produced 3 sets of twins - 2 from Lowline cows & 1 from a Shorthorn cow implanted with 1 Canadian Speckle
Park embryo. (The embryo must have split after it was implanted in my cow).

As it has been a very cold winter, I have been kept busy feeding hay to the expectant & new mums. Luckily the weather is getting warmer & we should have grass soon.

Wanamara Oo-La-La (WAN E177) in the Heifer Class 12 - 16 months & Wanamara Royal Opal
(WAN F192) in the baby Class 9 - 12 months.
Wanamara Oo-La-La backed up her Sydney Show win by taking out the Junior Champion Heifer, followed closely behind by Wanamara Royal Opal winning the Reserve Junior Champion Heifer, at her first show. They were following in the footsteps of Wanamara Findon Royale, who in 2007 was the Junior & Grand Champion Bull & Supreme Exhibit
at the 2007 Bendigo National Beef Show. He is the Grandsire of Oo-La-La & Sire of Royal Opal.

Ashley Mugnier visits Wanarama Farm
In April, the American Lowline Association sent their Junior Ambassador,
Ashley Mugnier from Muddy Creek Ranch, Wilsall, Montana, USA, to Australia.
We had the pleasure of having Ashley stay at Wanamara Farm for a few days & then Ashley & I went to the Royal Sydney Show. Ashley was given the job of caring for & exhibiting our sole entrant, 15 month old Wanamara Oo-La-La.
Ashley's expert handling skills helped Oo-La-La win her 12-16 month old Heifer Class, followed by taking out the Reserve Junior Heifer broad ribbon. Muddy Creek Ranch purchased our champion bull, Wanamara Findon Royale in 2007 to use as a major sire for their stud. He has proven to be a great success in the USA & Wanamara Oo-La-La is a Granddaughter of Findon Royale so Ashley had a special connection with our heifer.

Well done & thank you, Ashley
