Wanamara Stud is run by Julie & Greg Knight & we have enjoyed the rural lifestyle with our five children since 1988.

Wanamara is an aboriginal word for `small’ - the perfect explanation for the Lowline breed.

Wanamara Stud was established in 1995 in Taradale, Central Victoria on our 13 acre property. We were the first Lowline stud in the Kyneton and surrounding districts. We selected Lowline cattle because we wanted to run more animals than previously on our small acreage & found that these animals were perfect for this situation.

In 1996 we purchased another 40 acres in neighbouring Elphinstone, enabling us to increase our herd and begin a commercial Lowline enterprise. In 2002 we moved to Wanamara Farm at Blampied, on 156 acres, situated in the fertile volcanic foothills of Mt.Kooroocheang & just a short 10 minute drive from Daylesford in the Victorian Central Highlands.

In January 2009 the Goulburn Valley in Northern Victoria, became the home of Wanamara Farm on our 254 acre property.

At Major Plains, just east of Dookie, between Shepparton & Benalla, our Lowlines, Speckle Parks & commercial cattle have been enjoying the much warmer climate & the fertile pastures.

                          Export

In 2000 and 2002 our bulls and heifers were purchased by the Chinese Government and exported to China after on-farm inspections by Chinese Government delegates. These animals are being used to establish beef herds on small acreage farms in the Chinese provinces. In 2007 we began exporting our unique Wanamara genetics to the USA & our American clients are very satisfied with their new breeding stock purchased from us.
Our Australian Champion bull, Wanamara Findon Royale is making his mark as a much sought-after genetic sire in the United States.
Wanamara Emu Dreaming, Wanamara Gin & Tonic & Wanamara Royal Flush have all been producing prize-winning progeny for our American clients.

Our stud has a National Johnes Cattlemap status of MN3 so our cattle can be sold & shown interstate, including Western Australia, recently selling a bull to David & Stacey Collins of Harcourt Stud, WA.

All of our breeding cattle are GeneSTAR tested for the Marbling, Tenderness & Feed Efficiency genes. Our champion sire, Findon, is a 14 star GeneSTAR bull with 3 Marbling, 6 Tenderness & 5 Feed Efficiency stars. Findon’s licensed semen is available for purchase directly from us.

Our herd is free of Pestivirus & all cattle are vaccinated with Pestigard and Ultravac 7in1

We are active members of ALCA (Australian Lowline Cattle Association), SRPG (Southern Region Promotional Group, Victoria), ALCA Breedplan and all our animals are performance recorded.

In 2009 we particated in a successful Farm Day, where we opened our farm to a Melbourne 'city' family.

An article written by journalist Emily Sobey about 'Local Women in Agriculture' & published by the Ballarat Courier on 23rd January 2008 gives further insight into our farm enterprise.
